Today's Story Highlights
Did Talking on a Cellphone While Driving Get a Bum Rap?
It wasn't all that long ago that the talk about cellphones and driving
was all talk. That is, consumers, driving-safety advocates, and
lawmakers debated whether using a hands-free device was enough to make
talking on a cellphone safe, or whether talking on the newly ubiquitous
devices while behind the wheel should be banned outright.

Apple vs. Google vs. Microsoft: World War 3 Cometh
Regardless of what I wrote last week, which focused on Apple's problems
coming out of the Red Hat event, Apple is on a roll. It's expected to
gain substantial share this quarter because Snow Leopard will make it
into the quarter and Windows 7 won't. However, in October, Microsoft is
planning to come back with a rush, and next year will bring its not-so-
secret weapon: the Apple-targeting Microsoft store.

Should FOSS 'Match Microsoft' on Interoperability?
Well the ink had barely dried on our recent Linux Blog Safari column
about security when news came out last week that a new Linux kernel
vulnerability had been discovered. D'oh! Affecting all 2.4 and 2.6
kernels since 2001 on all architectures, the flaw was found and then
described Thursday on the cr0 blog by Julien Tinnes and Tavis Ormandy.

Pen Computer Maker Draws a Bead on Mac Users
For more than two decades, technologists have spent considerable
cognitive power trying to marry the power of the pen and the computer.
Up to now, their efforts have largely ended up in the gutter of a dead
end-street for gadgets. Those past failures haven't deterred Livescribe
from rebirthing a pen-as-computer product.

Managing a Passel of Passwords With Online Tools
Do you use your kids' names? Your pet's? Your favorite color? We all use
some dumb passwords that are too easy to guess. Worse, we use the same
ones for lots of Web sites. So if one site gets compromised, or an
employee there is dishonest, someone could start trying out that
password on other sites where you have accounts, like Amazon or PayPal,
and you've got trouble.

Neighborhood Watch 2.0
Cruise down the tree-lined streets of the Old Oaks neighborhood in
Columbus, Ohio, on a summer evening and know this: Someone is watching
you. It might be Richard Vickers, who records your license plate number
in a notebook as he retrieves gun shell casings from the sidewalk while
out on his nightly walk. Or it might be Doug Motz, who alerts via text
message: "Watch out for the green van lurking in the alley."

Can Zune HD's Radio Kill the MP3 Star?
Microsoft has officially launched its war against the iPod touch,
announcing that the new Zune HD is available for pre-order online at
various sites. The Zune HD will hit the shelves Sept. 15, Microsoft
said. Like the iPod touch, it is available in 16- and 32-GB models. It
has WiFi, a touchscreen, HD Radio and high-definition video.
