Today's Story Highlights

The Enterprise Architects of the New Era
The role of enterprise architecture is in flux, especially as we
consider the heightening interest in cloud computing and in the fluid
sourcing options for IT applications, data services and infrastructure,
not to mention business processes that fall outside of IT entirely.

The BPO Outlook: Mostly Cloudy With Patches of Sun
Five years ago, megadeals were all the rage in the business process
outsourcing (BPO) world. Global players such as IBM, Accenture, ACS and
CSC were racking up billion-dollar multiyear contracts, mainly for
accounting, human resource and procurement functions. Now that's
changing.

BetOnSports Founder Pleads Guilty to Racketeering Charges
The founder of the online gambling site BetOnSports.com pleaded guilty
on Friday to federal racketeering conspiracy and other charges,
concluding years of investigating and prosecuting a case in the complex
world of offshore sports gambling. Gary Kaplan, 50, agreed in a plea
deal to forfeit $43.6 million in illegally obtained revenue from his
criminal enterprise.

No Kindle? No Problem. Smartphones Fill the Gap
A few weeks ago, Pasquale Castaldo was waiting at the Dallas-Fort Worth
airport for a delayed flight, when a man sitting across from him pulled
out an Amazon Kindle book-reading device. "Gee, maybe I should think
about e-books myself," Castaldo thought. He didn't have a Kindle, but he
did have a BlackBerry. He pulled it out and looked for available
applications.

Battling the Buccaneers of Beijing
American companies counting on a favorable trade ruling against China to
boost sales of CDs, DVDs, books and video games will need a crackdown on
rampant piracy before they can reap big benefits. Chinese incomes are
lower than in the United States, and the quality of pirated
entertainment there is quite good, making legal goods a tougher sell.

Crushing Sales Figures Don't Signal 'Game Over' for Industry
It turns out that the video game entertainment category is not
recession-proof after all, judging from the NPD Group's most recent
monthly report. Retail sales games in July -- the fifth straight month
to register a decline -- plummeted to $848.8 million, a 29 percent drop
compared to this time last year.
