Not long ago, I discovered what is to date, a favorite productivity add-on for Firefox. Maybe even the favorite. As someone who lives half the waking week plugged into the Web, add-ons aren't just about novelty, they're also about getting things done. The less I have to manage open tabs, media downloads, and the often laborious task of seeking information in the deeper layers of a site, the more time I can spend evaluating software.
So, if you haven't had the pleasure already, meet SmarterFox. Developed by Yongqian Li, it's a multitasking fiend that helps make searching, pasting, surfing, and even downloading both smoother and faster. It's not without its limitations, but the substantial pros far outweigh the minor cons. We take you on a tour of the features in this SmarterFox slideshow.
In other software news, Microsoft has delivered Windows Live Movie Maker 1.0 (download). The free, newly-designed movie publisher for Windows Vista and Windows 7 centers on simplicity, particularly with its automatic creation feature. That's great for those getting their production feet wet, and excessively basic for video enthusiasts who already feel comfortable with more advanced concepts like time lines, master slides, audio tracks, and so on. We've received a mixed bag of positive and negative e-mails about this one. If you've got Vista or Windows 7 installed, take it for a spin and let us know if you can see yourself using it to churn out videos.
