Are Plasma TVs worth buying?

Q: I'd like to buy a new plasma TV, but I don't know if it's worth it, given the withdrawal of two top plasma players.
-- George

A: Well George, personally I think there's no reason to avoid buying plasma just because Pioneer and Vizio dropped out. In case you haven't heard, dear reader, George is referring to announcements by Pioneer and Vizio, two companies from the high end and the low end of the plasma market, respectively. Both will no longer produce plasma TVs.... -- David Katzmaier, CNET senior editor

Are all Blu-Ray players the same?

Q: These below-$200 price points are great for sales, but what happens six months from now? Will Blu-ray become a commodity?
--Matthew

Why are DVD recorders missing HDMI?

Q: Why doesn't a DVD recorder have an HDMI in, as well as an HDMI out? -- Deesmac

A: It's a great question. High-Definition Multimedia Interface provides the advantage of passing a high-bandwidth all-digital high-definition video and audio signal on a single cable, as opposed to the tangle of component video plus audio cables that were required for HD.... -- John Falcone, CNET senior editor

What discs to buy for a DVD Recorder?

Q: I have a Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK recorder that I recently purchased. This is all new to me. I would like to know what disc type I should buy for recording VCR tapes onto a DVD disc. Also, is there a difference between +R and -R? -- Lisa

A: Those are excellent questions. Yes, it can be a confusing (and probably a frustrating) shopping experience to browse your local electronics store and decide between all the disc spindles labeled with + and - signs.... -- Matthew Panton, CNET member

How do you find setting and calibration info for TVs on CNET?

Q: Thanks for the dark-room picture settings, but could you give me settings for my TV in a bright room? I read the whole review, but I can't find the settings. Where are they? Are the picture settings for one model going to look good on a different screen size or model by the same manufacturer?

A: At CNET we publish our recommended dark-room picture settings with every HDTV we review, and it's one of our most popular features. We also host a picture settings forum that you can search for your model, so you can try our settings and see if you like them. We still get lots of questions from readers interested in picture settings, however, so we'll cover a few of the most popular here.... -- David Katzmaier, CNET senior editor
