Today's Story Highlights
What's the Deal With Chrome's New Beta?
Internet search giant Google has released the latest beta of its Chrome
browser, and it's come with several tweaks. The new version is faster;
it lets users customize the Tab page, it allows for the addition of
themes, it has HTML 5 capabilities, and it spiffs up Chrome's
controversial Omnibox. Google is still working on Linux and Mac OS X
support.

Apple and Google on Brain Vacation
Summer is a time to relax, a time to take a vacation, a time to do
things you can't do during the work year. However, I'm not sure any time
is a good time to send your brain on vacation, and I'm starting to
wonder if the leaders at Google and Apple have done just that.

On Bugs, Viruses, Malware and Linux
Among all the reasons geeks choose Linux, security is often near the top
of the list. And no wonder -- personal preferences aside on all the
other many relevant issues, there's plenty of evidence to suggest our
favorite operating system really is more impervious.

New Eye-Fi Photo Storage Card Zooms In on Mac Crowd
Freeing digital cameras from the fetters of cables and card readers has
been a lucrative business for the makers of Eye-Fi. Eye-Fi is a WiFi-
enabled storage card that permits photos and videos to be transferred
wirelessly to a computer or directly to image sharing sites on the Web.
The most recent flavor of the product, the 2GB Eye-Fi Geo, is being
exclusively aimed at the Apple market.

When Censorship Strikes, Herdict Is Watching
When Shanghai blogger Isaac Mao tried to watch a YouTube clip of Chinese
police beating Tibetans, all he got was an error message. Mao thought
the error -- just after the one-year anniversary of a crackdown on
Tibetan protesters in China -- was too suspicious to be coincidental, so
he reported it on a new Harvard-based Web site that tracks online
censorship.

New Sony Walkman: Handsome Hardware, Spotty Software
Thirty years after revolutionizing portable music with the Walkman for
playing cassette tapes, Sony is trying to master the digital media
player with the X Series Walkman. Tunes sound great, and videos look
crisp on the device, but Sony still has a lot of work to do to catch up
with Apple's market-ruling iPod.

Russian Hackers Besiege Social Sites to Silence Pro-Georgia Blogger
If you were unable to log on to Twitter or Facebook Thursday morning,
you can consider yourself collateral damage in the ongoing conflict
between Russia and Georgia. Facebook has confirmed that a pro-Georgian
blogger was the target of a widespread distributed denial of service
attack that hit the top social networks and other Web sites.
