Managing the Enterprise Data Deluge (25:07 minutes)
As the old saying goes, information is the lifeblood of an organization.
However, that's an imperfect analogy, because most information is not in
a state of constant, smooth flow. Rather, it's sitting in little pockets
everywhere -- paper, memory sticks, laptops, the data center, etc. By
getting a better handle on the rising tide of info surrounding them,
enterprises get a better picture of what's really going on.

Today's Story Highlights
Rough Times for Angels: Q&A With MarketStar Chairman Alan E. Hall
You might say that entrepreneur Alan E. Hall lives in two business
worlds. Don't complain to him how challenging it is to grow a business
in today's fragile economy. He knows those struggles firsthand as a
business owner. He also knows how next-to-impossible it is for startup
business owners to find financial backers. Hall is a player in the
venture capital sector as well.

WTO Presses China to Lower Barriers to Media Content
China said Thursday it might appeal a major World Trade Organization
ruling that told Beijing to ease restrictions on imported movies, music
and books in its latest trade dispute with Washington. The Commerce
Ministry insisted Beijing does not hamper imports of media products,
despite Wednesday's decision by a WTO panel of experts that it violates
free-trade rules.

Distilling ERP Data Into Tasty BI Brew
Globalization, supply chain complexity, and commodity and currency
volatility combine to produce mountains of business data. In the past,
just being able to collect and manage the data was task enough, but now
companies are looking to mine the data mountain to drive actionable
value. Enterprise resource planning systems provide much-needed
capabilities.

Microsoft Loses Battle of Word in Texas Court
Judge Leonard Davis of the U.S. District Court for Eastern Texas has
issued an injunction against the sale of Microsoft Word after a jury
found that Microsoft had infringed on a patent held by a Toronto-based
company. The plantiff, i4i, sued Microsoft in 2007, alleging that
Microsoft Word unlawfully infringed on its patents based on XML, DOCX
and DOCM file formats.

Zong Turns Mobile Phones Into 'Charge Cards'
In the U.S., consumers are accustomed to paying for merchandise with
checks, credit cards and debit cards. Online shopping and banking
transactions are dependent on electronic money transfers between vendors
and their customers' financial institutions. That experience, however,
is not universal. Consumers in Europe and Asia are used to different
types of systems.

Microsoft Opens Office in Nokia Smartphones
Nokia and Microsoft on Wednesday announced they are teaming up to create
and offer mobile enterprise applications in a bid to tap the fast-
growing mobile apps market. Apps could constitute the next gold rush for
the mobile industry, and carriers and smartphone vendors are both
battling for a share of what could be a very lucrative market.
