Managing the Enterprise Data Deluge (25:07 minutes)
As the old saying goes, information is the lifeblood of an organization.
However, that's an imperfect analogy, because most information is not in
a state of constant, smooth flow. Rather, it's sitting in little pockets
everywhere -- paper, memory sticks, laptops, the data center, etc. By
getting a better handle on the rising tide of info surrounding them,
enterprises get a better picture of what's really going on.

Today's Story Highlights
Extreme E-tail: Sell the Product, Sell the Search, Sell the Space
Though it's only mid-summer, retailers are knee-deep in finalizing their
holiday plans. This season, they are under extraordinary pressure to
generate as much revenue as possible from their online stores, which --
for many -- is their best performing channel. Now is the right time to
explore the innovative, quick-to-implement projects that will drive
incremental revenue during this critical sales season.

Where Will AAPL Be in a Year?
If you're going to buy Apple stock, buy it for the short term, and keep
a wary eye out for the overall economic situation, warns a message from
investment banking firm UBS. That might be good advice, given the
general high level of excitement about all things Apple. The loudest
rumors surrounding Apple now are that that the company plans to bring
out a tablet computer and offer it on Verizon's cellular network.

Main Street Meets the Cloud
Late on a summer morning recently I got a call from my wife saying "On
Point," a public radio program, was doing a show on about cloud
computing. "Isn't that what you write about?" she said. "You should
listen or call in." Well, I tried, and all the lines were jammed, but I
was able to make a comment on the Web site. It was a funny show in some
respects, though short on laughs.

Court Doesn't Buy Consumer Rights Argument in RealDVD Case
A federal judge has barred RealNetworks from selling a device that
allows consumers to copy DVDs to their computer hard drives, pending a
full trial. Walt Disney, Sony and Universal Studios, among others, filed
suit against Seattle-based RealNetworks in 2008, saying its RealDVD
device is an illegal pirating tool.

Redbox Sees Red Over Fox DVD Delays
DVD rental kiosk company Redbox said Wednesday it has sued 20th Century
Fox over the movie studio's attempts to delay its titles from appearing
in Redbox vending machines. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District
Court in Wilmington, Del., marks the latest escalation in a fight over
Redbox's service, which has divided Hollywood studios.

VMware Laps Up SpringSource
VMware is acquiring SpringSource, an enterprise and Web application
development and management company, to eventually build out a Platform
as a Service offering. Under the terms of the agreement, VMware will pay
approximately $362 million in cash and equity, and it will assume
approximately $58 million of unvested stock and options.
