Today's Story Highlights

Digital Certificates - Don't Do Business Online Without Them
When you conduct business online -- whether it's selling merchandise
through a Web site or simply using email for company communication,
there is some level of digital risk. The Web has enabled instant global
access to conduct business remotely like never before in history. The
downside of remote commerce is the inability to conduct business face to
face.

Should USPS Cut Services or Offer More?
Postmaster General John Potter is trying to think outside the mailbox.
"We have a network of 37,000 retail outlets. America loves them and we
want to keep as many open as possible, but we cannot just sell stamps in
them," he told a Senate hearing Thursday. The Postal Service has lost
$4.7 billion so far this year and expects to be $7 billion in the red by
the end of the fiscal year.

Schmidt or No Schmidt, Apple's Board Doesn't Steer the Ship
I find this whole Eric Schmidt-is-a-Google-spy thing terribly amusing,
and not because the Fake Steve Jobs is still doing his thing with joyful
aplomb. No, the whole situation is funny because Apple's board of
directors doesn't direct Apple. Seriously, in the history of corporate
boards of directors, can anyone think of a board that is less needed
than Apple's?

Publishers Cast Line for New Readers With Free E-Books
James Patterson's latest best seller, The Angel Experiment, is a little
different from his usual hits. The novel isn't new; it came out four
years ago. Readers aren't picking it up at bookstores, but mostly on the
Kindle site at Amazon.com. The price is low, even for an old release:
$0.00.

Legal Sparring Over 'Brutal Legend' Ends in Settlement
Attorneys for gaming giant Activision notified a court Wednesday that
they reached a settlement over the release of "Brutal Legend," a video
game starring Jack Black. Activision had sued Double Fine Productions to
try to stop the October release of "Brutal Legend" by rival Electronic
Arts. Activision claimed it still owned the rights to the game and that
Double Fine failed to deliver it on time.

Speculation Sizzles Over Google's On2 Buy
Google will be acquiring video compression technology provider On2
Technologies in a stock deal valued at $106.5 million. The deal, which
requires On2 shareholder and regulatory approval, is expected to close
in Q4. Speculation over Google's plans for the On2 technology is
rampant.
