The SMB Case for Sending Security Skyward (32:22 minutes)
As more devices -- especially mobile devices -- become part of a
business's network, they create more vectors for attack, and tightening
security becomes increasingly difficult. For some companies, cloud-based
security solutions may be easier to administer, more convenient and less
costly.

Today's Story Highlights

Keys to an Even Greener Data Center
In today's world of hybrid cars and wind farms, consuming energy wisely
is on every individual's agenda. Companies and their IT departments
should be no different. Statistics aside, there is no doubt that
collectively data centers have a huge "carbon footprint" and are the
biggest or one of the biggest consumers of energy in every company.

Will Android Look Good in a 3-Piece Suit?
Google apparently wants its Android mobile device platform to compete in
the enterprise arena. Future versions of the open source operating
system will include more support for business users, suggested Andy
Rubin, vice president of engineering at Google. If Google aims to
succeed in that endeavor, though, Android will have to catch up in two
critical areas.

It's Big Bowl of Hot Alphabet Soup for Apple
On Monday, Google CEO Eric Schmidt stepped down from Apple's board of
directors, just three months after vowing to stay on. However, that
announcement was apparently not enough to satisfy federal regulators --
the Federal Trade Commission later reiterated that it would continue
looking into the two companies' top-level ties.

Pain and Paradigm Shift
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told analysts last week that ultra-thin PCs
will be the answer to the growing popularity of netbooks. I doubt that,
but I can certainly understand Ballmer's interest in backing the ultra-
thins, and this obviously has implications for larger issues like cloud
computing. By now, the sides have been clearly marked out in the debate
about on-demand vs. on-premise.

RadioShack Touches Up Gray Hairs With Rebranding Hoopla
One of the nation's most venerable electronics retailers wants to update
its image by calling itself "The Shack" in an upcoming branding
campaign, announced Monday. The branding won't change the name of the
retailer or its stores, but it will show up in advertising and other
marketing channels.

FTC to Apple, Google Boards: We're Watching
If Apple and Google executives thought that Google CEO Eric Schmidt's
Monday resignation from Apple's board of directors would end any
governmental interest in their business practices, they may have to
reboot their plans. The Federal Trade Commission has announced that it
had already been looking into the board membership situation among the
Silicon Valley tech giants.
