IT Needs a New Drug (57:10 minutes)
How does the term "cloud computing" relate to the rivers of
technological alphabet soup -- BMP, CEP, SOA, SaaS, WOA and so forth --
flowing into IT today? Perhaps calling it all "the cloud" is
oversimplifying things, and we need a new concept to propel us to the
next stage. What will be the next huge, overarching, all-encompassing
phase of enterprise technology? What's IT's new drug?

Today's Story Highlights
The Multichannel E-Commerce Path Out of the Recession
In the midst of the U.S. economic crisis, cautious spending and
downsizing have left the retail industry in dire straits. Even as retail
numbers drop, however, online shopping and total online sales continue
to show steady growth in the face of adverse economic conditions.

Jammie Thomas, RIAA Go At It Again
The recording industry began its second attempt at proving that a
Minnesota woman engaged in illegal sharing of copyrighted music on the
Internet and should be held accountable. Attorney Tim Reynolds told a
jury Monday that the record companies would prove that Jammie Thomas-
Rasset, 32, of Brainerd, illegally shared songs on the Kazaa network.

GE Aims to Jump-Start EMR Adoption With No-Interest Loans
General Electric's healthcare division said Monday it will offer
financing to doctors and hospitals that buy GE's electronic medical
records equipment in an effort to cover an expected lag in the flow of
federal stimulus money meant for the medical technology. GE Healthcare
will make $100 million available to potential buyers of GE's equipment
that computerizes paper patient medical records.

Administration Mulls Financial Services Industry Makeover
The Obama administration wants to overhaul the country's financial rule
book by giving the Federal Reserve increased powers but is backing away
from proposals to consolidate various regulatory agencies. The
administration's overhaul plan would make the Fed a systemic risk
regulator to oversee large institutions whose failure could threaten the
stability of the entire system.

Virgin Serves Up MP3 Buffet
Virgin Media, the cable TV operator owned by entrepreneur Richard
Branson, launched a new kind of music download subscription service
Monday with Universal, the world's largest music company. The service,
described by the companies as a world first, will allow Virgin Media's
broadband customers in Britain to stream and download as many songs and
albums as they like from Universal's catalog for a fee.

IBM Offers Platform for Diving Into the Cloud
IBM had added a new service-and-hardware offering to its cloud computing
repertoire. The bundle targets users seeking a single jumping-off point
for deployment of a cloud environment focused on a discrete task, such
as a test bed for application development. IBM CloudBurst is a set of
preintegrated hardware, storage, virtualization and networking tools
with built-in service management.
