Top 5 Reasons for Building Governance Into the Cloud (44:34 minutes)
Proper service governance is critical for businesses to modernize and
prosper in cloud computing operations. Major vendors are already
recognizing this need and reflecting it in their product offerings.
However, what specifically needs to be governed, and how? How can cloud
governance help organizations provide better management and better
modeling around processes?

Today's Story Highlights

Top 5 Reasons for Building Governance Into the Cloud
Our topic this week centers on governance as a requirement and an
enabler for cloud computing. We're going to talk not just about IT
governance, or service-oriented architecture governance. It's really
more about extended enterprise processes, resource consumption, and
resource-allocation governance.

ERP Should Pay for Itself in a Year: Q&A With xTuple CEO Ned Lilly
xTuple is an open source ERP provider, and CEO Ned Lilly says there are
few fellow travelers on his company's path. In this tanking economy, the
company has been leveraging both its open source bona fides and the
fundamental functionality that is inherent in an ERP system to gain
market share.

New ICANN Chief Eager to Mediate Internet Policy Wars
The Internet agency with key oversight of the monikers behind every Web
site, email address and Twitter post named former U.S. cybersecurity
chief Rod Beckstrom Friday as its next chief executive. The board of the
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers approved his hiring
in a voice vote as ICANN capped weeklong meetings in Sydney, Australia.

Bartz Cracks the Whip at First Shareholder Meeting
Yahoo Chief Executive Carol Bartz echoed the turnaround promises of her
predecessors as she presided over the first shareholder meeting since
her hiring, yet she left little doubt the slumping Internet company's
new boss isn't the same as the old bosses. Like Terry Semel did in 2007
and Jerry Yang again last year, Bartz assured shareholders Thursday that
she will polish Yahoo's tarnished brand.

Kayak Makes Waves Over Bing's Design Similarities
Microsoft is the target of yet another legal challenge -- this time from
the online travel Web site Kayak, which has sent the software giant a
letter noting similarities between its own site and Bing's travel
service. It has asked Microsoft to take steps to address the matter.

Investors Flock to Palm Despite Another Beastly Quarter
Palm continued to hemorrhage money in the fourth quarter of its fiscal
2009. For the quarter that ended May 31, the firm's net loss totaled
more than $91.5 million. However, the figures it revealed Thursday
represent the months just ahead of Palm's release of the Pre. Palm's
latest smartphone sold 100,000 units in its first weekend on shelves,
according to partner carrier Sprint.

Windows 7 Likely to Get Chilly Reception at Enterprise Door
Right now, Microsoft is focusing on the consumer market by getting
Windows 7 out in time for the holiday season and announcing price points
compatible with recession-era budgets. However, an even bigger
constituency is the business community -- and after the debacle that was
Vista, it is understandable to wonder how eagerly it will embrace
Windows 7.
