IT Needs a New Drug (57:10 minutes)
How does the term "cloud computing" relate to the rivers of
technological alphabet soup -- BMP, CEP, SOA, SaaS, WOA and so forth --
flowing into IT today? Perhaps calling it all "the cloud" is
oversimplifying things, and we need a new concept to propel us to the
next stage. What will be the next huge, overarching, all-encompassing
phase of enterprise technology? What's IT's new drug?

Today's Story Highlights
The Next Wave of E-Tail: Considered Commerce
The products that fueled first-generation e-commerce -- books, software
and music, to name a few -- are all simple to understand items that can
be easily shipped to consumers. Today, we are at the outset of a second
wave of online growth, as consumers push beyond these simple
transactions to research and purchase more complex products online.

Senate Probes, China Inroads and a Smartphone Surge
Though the market in general has suffered this week, Apple's shares have
stayed relatively stable. At market close Tuesday, they stood at
$136.35, up 26 cents for the day. However, that's a loss over last week
-- last Tuesday, they closed at $143.05, down by $1.13 from the previous
day's close.

Of 'Jurassic Park' and All Things 2.0
What do these things have in common? Maybe nothing other than that the
movie has a sequel and the two-dot-oh suffix is a sequel. Also, the
start of blockbuster movie sequel season overlaps with trade shows like
Sales 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0. Sales 2.0 was held in Boston a couple of
weeks ago, Enterprise 2.0 is coming next week, and I can't wait.

How Big a Loser Is YouTube?
Internet video leader YouTube's losses have been overblown by some
analysts, but corporate parent Google doesn't mind the misperception,
according to a study being released Wednesday. Technology consultants at
RampRate project YouTube's operating losses this year at $174.2 million
-- far below the $470.6 million estimated by Credit Suisse analysts
Spencer Wang and Kenneth Sena in an April.

AP Looks for More Action Online as Newspaper Revenue Fades
The Associated Press hopes to negotiate more lucrative licensing deals
with major Web sites while mining new revenue from advertisers and
readers as the 163-year-old news cooperative adapts to Internet-driven
changes in the media. Chief Executive Tom Curley touched upon the AP's
financial priorities after a meeting with employees in which he
discussed possible revenue opportunities and initiatives to protect
online content.

Microsoft Hauls Click Fraudsters Into Court
Microsoft has initiated a civil lawsuit in the Western District of
Seattle seeking $750,000 in damages from three individuals in Vancouver,
British Columbia, for committing click fraud. The three alleged
fraudsters are two brothers and a mother -- Eric Lam, Gordon Lam and
Melanie Suen -- who, according to Microsoft, have deployed botnets to
drive up clicks at Web sites that compete with theirs.
