The Many Layers of the Cloud (39:24 minutes)
The idea of cloud computing isn't a wholly new and suddenly emerging
idea. Rather, it's the latest in a progression of evolving ideas that
have built upon each other ever since the Internet began. To create an
adequate definition for the cloud, one would have to address its many
layers -- Software as a Service, Platform as a Service, and
Infrastructure as a Service, to name a few.

Today's Story Highlights

Gold Mine or Mine Field: Pay Per Click vs. Keywords
Since its conception in 1996, Google's search engine has played a key
role in redefining not only the role of the Internet, but also the
accessibility of the Internet to the end-user. In 2000, Google began
selling ads associated with search keywords. However, the way these ads
are triggered has led to numerous controversies.

Cross-Selling's Time Has Come
"You got your peanut butter in my chocolate!" -- "You got your chocolate
in my peanut butter!" What the initially skeptical characters in Reese's
famous candy commercials learned through a somewhat painful cross-sell
process -- usually by bumping into each other -- was that these
complementary ingredients together made each one better.

The Business Case for Virtual Business, Part 1
It wasn't long after the launch of Linden Lab's Second Life back in 2003
that companies and organizations around the globe began to sit up and
take notice. The prospect of millions of potential customers -- all
flocking to the same destination and congregating there -- is enough to
whet the appetite of even the most conservative and change-averse
organization, after all.

Google: Italian Court Case Threatens Internet Freedom
Testimony begins Tuesday in the Italian trial of four Google executives
accused of defamation and violating privacy for allowing a video to be
posted online showing an autistic youth being abused. All four deny
wrongdoing. The case could set the tone for new limits on sharing videos
and other content on the Web.

Nortel Asset Sale Punctuates End of Era
Nortel Networks has agreed to sell its two advanced wireless technology
business units to Nokia Siemens for $650 million. The companies hope to
close the sale by Q3 of this year. It is an ignominious end for the
telco, which at one time was one of the dominant players in the global
marketplace. In January, however, the Toronto-based company filed for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
