IT Needs a New Drug (57:10 minutes)
How does the term "cloud computing" relate to the rivers of
technological alphabet soup -- BMP, CEP, SOA, SaaS, WOA and so forth --
flowing into IT today? Perhaps calling it all "the cloud" is
oversimplifying things, and we need a new concept to propel us to the
next stage. What will be the next huge, overarching, all-encompassing
phase of enterprise technology? What's IT's new drug?

Today's Story Highlights
Use the Cloud, Luke: Easier Shipping Is in the Stars
The past decade of e-commerce has been a story of small companies using
online and Internet-delivered services to "act like the big boys." To
date, the leveling of the playing field made possible by the Internet
has not carried over to physical infrastructure investments like
warehousing or shipping. However, all that is changing with Internet-
delivered warehousing and order fulfillment.

Getting a Grip on Business Intelligence TCO
IT and business management are increasingly expressing alarm at rising
costs associated with business intelligence implementations. The fear of
hidden costs has kept many companies from making an investment, and many
adopters have found that the costs related to ongoing support and
maintenance of an ever-changing set of analytical and reporting
requirements inhibits user penetration.

AT&T Budges on iPhone 3G S Upgrades
AT&T will allow some current iPhone owners to upgrade to a new model at
the same price as new buyers when it is released Friday. Wednesday's
announcement comes after AT&T took some criticism from iPhone owners who
felt that its prices were unfair. Current owners would have to pay $399
for the cheapest version of the new iPhone 3G S, compared with $199 for
new buyers.

Hasbro Gets Medieval on D&D Fans for Posting Handbook Online
Dungeons & Dragons & lawyers, oh my -- eight people face accusations
they illegally posted the pioneering role-playing game's newest handbook
for download on the Internet. Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of
Hasbro, is seeking unspecified damages in three copyright infringement
lawsuits naming a total of eight defendants in U.S. District Court in
Seattle.

HLTH, WebMD Move Forward With All-Stock Merger
HLTH Corp. said Thursday it will complete its merger into health Web-
site operator WebMD Health Corp. in an all-stock deal valued at about
$1.2 billion. The companies had agreed to combine in a $2.31 billion cash
and stock deal in February 2008, but canceled the deal in October due to
financial market turmoil.

Falling Behind Facebook, MySpace Slashes Workforce
MySpace on Tuesday announced it will lay off 420 staffers, or nearly 30
percent of its 1,420-strong workforce. MySpace and parent company News
Corp. both said, in effect, that the cuts would result in a more
efficient and innovative company. One reason for the cuts could be that
Google reportedly wants to haggle over the terms of its highly lucrative
deal with MySpace parent company Fox Interactive Media.
