The Many Layers of the Cloud (39:24 minutes)
The idea of cloud computing isn't a wholly new and suddenly emerging
idea. Rather, it's the latest in a progression of evolving ideas that
have built upon each other ever since the Internet began. To create an
adequate definition for the cloud, one would have to address its many
layers -- Software as a Service, Platform as a Service, and
Infrastructure as a Service, to name a few.

Today's Story Highlights

So You Want to Start a Tech Business, Part 1
Funny thing about economic disasters: They tend to spawn a bevy of new
businesses. It's not that a recession is the best time for pie-in-the-
sky thinking; rather, it's when pie-in-the-mouth issues become most
pressing. "The tantalizing successes of some startups, coupled perhaps
with the rise in unemployment, have more people pondering new ideas and
new careers," said angel investor Doug Chertok.

Of Jobs, Wireless Exclusivity and the Competition
Are concerns about Steve Jobs are impacting Apple's share prices?
Apple's share prices have been slipping since it was learned over the
weekend that the company's CEO may have had a liver transplant. Trading
in Apple shares was volatile on Tuesday, with prices changing by the
minute.

The Long March of Androids to the Enterprise
T-Mobile's Tuesday announcement that it will offer a new Android
smartphone in August has raised interest in the possibility of greater
competition for enterprise adoption. The new Android-powered smartphone,
the myTouch 3G, will come loaded with features -- but they are not
likely enough to meet the enterprise expectations for security and task
integration set by BlackBerry smartphones.

Support Revenue Keeps Oracle on Even Keel
Software maker Oracle's results for its latest quarter topped Wall
Street's forecast Tuesday, despite a 5 percent drop in sales and a 7
percent decline in profit. The company blamed the declines on the
effects of a stronger dollar -- which makes deals done in other
currencies translate into fewer greenbacks. Companies also have been
shelling out less for new software because of the recession.

TJX Closes Chapter in Data Breach Saga
The parent company of retailers T.J. Maxx and Marshall's will pay $9.75
million in a settlement with multiple states related to a massive data
theft that exposed tens of millions of payment card numbers. Framingham,
Mass.-based TJX said Tuesday it will pay $2.5 million to create a data
security fund for states as well as a settlement amount of $5.5 million
and $1.75 million to cover expenses.

MySpace Hunkers Down in US
Social networking pioneer MySpace is planning to close at least four
offices in overseas markets, as well as eliminate two-thirds of its
staff outside the U.S. Specifically, it is going to cut 300 of the 450
jobs that are based in global markets. To be sure, MySpace is feeling
the squeeze from the recession.

Intel Buddies Up With Nokia in Mobile Device Deal
In what's being hailed as a milestone moment, Intel and Nokia announced
they will work together on developing new mobile chipset technologies,
as well as new devices to use them. What, exactly, those devices might
be or when they might find their way into consumers' hands remains
unknown.

Reports Fan Flames of Speculation Over Steve Jobs' Health
Once again, the technology mediasphere is engrossed with Apple CEO Steve
Jobs' health, and the questions are ricocheting off the virtual walls:
What did Apple know? When did it know it? What is it legally obliged to
reveal? This latest round of speculation was prompted by a weekend Wall
Street Journal report revealing that Jobs had a liver transplant in
April.
