Message From Our Sponsor
When a high-end apparel manufacturer wanted an e-commerce
presence that was easy for merchandisers to manage,
they turned to ATG. Online sales have grown consistently;
more than tripling in their first year.
Read the ATG Case Study to see how.

Today's Story Highlights
The Front Line of the E-Commerce Tax Battle, Part 2
Many local governments have initiated class action lawsuits in an effort
to compel the collection of sales taxes on hotel room markups. Online
travel companies have responded to these cases along three main lines of
defense, marshaling both procedural and substantive arguments.

Can SaaS and Cloud Computing Be Location-Independent?
I'm increasingly convinced that today's technology is making it possible
to make cloud computing and SaaS solutions location-independent. The
idea of private clouds, as well as deploying "hybrid" SaaS solutions
behind the firewall, has become controversial among many cloud computing
and SaaS zealots who believe that this approach compromises the
fundamental value of today's cloud computing and SaaS capabilities.

Scribd Gains Legitimacy With Simon & Schuster on Board
The publisher of Stephen King and Chelsea Handler will be selling books
through Scribd, the online document-sharing service that the industry
has criticized for enabling the downloading of pirated texts. Scribd
announced Thursday that digital versions of books by King, Handler and
thousands of others published by Simon & Schuster can be purchased
through Scribd's online store.

Adios, Arrivederci, Au Revoir, Auf Wiedersehen and Goodbye, Analog TV
TV stations across the U.S. started cutting their analog signals Friday
morning, ending a 60-year run for the technology and likely stranding
more than 1 million unprepared homes without TV service. The Federal
Communications Commission put 4,000 operators on standby for calls from
confused viewers and set up demonstration centers in several cities.

Chrysler Customers' Shrinking Service Options
There are 789 fewer Chrysler dealers this week -- and by the end of next
year, there will be 1,100 fewer General Motors dealers. As the
automakers terminate contracts with dealers across the nation as part of
their bankruptcy reorganization, many owners of Chrysler and GM vehicles
will have to find new sources for oil changes, tuneups and major
repairs. What's a loyal owner to do?

Former iPod Guru Takes Palm's Helm
It's no accident that the new Palm Pre smartphone is compatible with
Apple's iTunes. The man who helped Steve Jobs turn the iPod and its
online music store into a digital revolution is the same man who has
helped design the Pre and its well-reviewed webOS operating system. Now
that man, Jon Rubinstein, will be the new Palm chairman and CEO.
replacing 16-year company veteran Ed Colligan.
