Message From Our Sponsor
When a high-end apparel manufacturer wanted an e-commerce
presence that was easy for merchandisers to manage,
they turned to ATG. Online sales have grown consistently;
more than tripling in their first year.
Read the ATG Case Study to see how.

The Mainframe Bridge to the Cloud (35:00 minutes)
How do developments in mainframe technology and automation relate to
cloud computing? Cloud computing is in a very basic sense virtualizing
resources within the data center. As enterprises seek to gain data
center efficiency, they're looking at bringing in a measure of
virtualization, optimizing operations in ways similar to what mainframes
have done for years.

Today's Story Highlights

Keeping CC Numbers Well-Cloaked: Q&A With Fingerhut's Mark Lieberg
It's a fact that might not bring a lot of comfort to consumers and
businesses, but it's true: The methods for protecting e-commerce
transactions haven't changed a great deal since online shopping became a
viable option in the early '90s. SSL and TSL encryption are the
protocols that slap on that little padlock you see at the bottom of a
Web site once you've begun the purchase process.

Safeguarding the Crown Jewels With Online Brand Monitoring
The most valuable asset of a company is its good name. Yet the rapid
growth of the Internet and the explosion of social media, in particular,
have made it infinitely more challenging for a company to protect its
good name. Recent examples abound of how, owing to the viral effect of
social media, ordinary people now wield the power to do untold harm to a
brand.

Two SK Software Firms Lose Bid for Damages From Microsoft
A South Korean court Thursday rejected compensation claims filed by two
software companies against Microsoft. Digito.com and Sanview Technology
had alleged that Microsoft's bundling of its instant messenger and
Windows Media Services programs with its operating system had caused
them monetary damage.

EU Urges US to Give Up 'Illegal' Online Gambling Ban
The European Union urged the United States on Wednesday to open talks on
scrapping a ban on foreign online gambling companies, saying it breaks
global trade rules. The EU says it could seek compensation from the
World Trade Organization because the 2006 ban unfairly prevents foreign
Internet gambling sites from operating in the United States.

Google Maintains Cool Facade as Antitrust Heat Builds
Google doesn't believe it needs to change its ways despite three
separate U.S. government inquiries into whether some of the Internet
search leader's actions are thwarting competition. "There is no reason
to be upset or surprised with the scrutiny," Dana Wagner, Google's
competition counsel, told reporters Wednesday.

Feds Freeze Accounts Holding Online Poker Winnings
It looks as though the Southern District of New York has opened a new
front in the war on Internet gambling. Federal prosecutors have asked
Citibank, Wells Fargo and two smaller banks to freeze funds in accounts
belonging to two companies that process payouts on behalf of four
offshore poker sites, according to the Poker Players Alliance, a DC-
based advocacy group.
