Today's Story Highlights

Getting Ready for the Google Generation
Like every new generation, today's youth are unlike their predecessors,
and they are poised to make a significant impact on society and business
as they enter the workforce. While this may not seem like a revelation,
what is important to keep in mind is who is pulling some of the strings
that are already redefining how today's kids think and tomorrow's
workers will behave.

Expedia Is Spare but Savvy
My first impression of Expedia -- a site that I used to frequent but
haven't visited in at least a year -- is that its design is refreshingly
straightforward: a three-column layout relatively uncluttered with self-
promotion. Expedia's streamlined site does have its disadvantages,
though. I don't see where to sign up for flight status alerts, for
example.

Apple Homes In on the iPod's Next Conquests
Apple has made a tradition out of unveiling new iPods every fall. This
time around, though, the biggest part of the presentation wasn't the new
hardware or software, but rather the person running the show. CEO Steve
Jobs hosted his first public Apple event since coming back from an
extended leave of absence to fight off some very serious medical
problems.

IVR Systems, Part 1: Are They Done Yet?
Remember the bad old days of customer self-service? Automated systems
would present you with five or more different options -- any one of
which could lead to five or more other options. With touchtone systems,
accidentally pressing the wrong number at a prompt could result in
instant death by disconnection. Then came the speech-recognition
systems, with their own specific tortures.

Copyright Chief Lines Up With Google Book-Deal Opponents
The top U.S. copyright official has joined mounting opposition to a
class-action settlement that would give Google the digital rights to
millions of out-of-print books. Her objections cast further doubt on
whether the agreement will be allowed by a federal court, even as Google
offered a concession Thursday aimed at smoothing the way for approval.

New Sprint Plan Creates Giant Calling Circle
Sprint on Thursday announced a new calling plan featuring unrestricted
wireless calling to any mobile phone on any U.S. wireless carrier.
Sprint describes its Any Mobile, Anytime plan as a new feature to the
carrier's Everything Data plan. The Any Mobile, Anytime plan's price
starts at $69.99 per month.
