Today's Story Highlights

Blinders May Help When You're Tooling Around Travelocity
Travel Web sites were among the first category of e-commerce ventures to
actually make a buck a decade or so ago. It is astounding, therefore,
that recent industry reports show a deep dissatisfaction among many
users of these portals. In particular, Forrester Research recently
reported on the failings of several of these sites, both in terms of
tools and customer service.

Big-League ISPs Press FCC to Lower Bar on 'Broadband'
Several telephone companies have suggested to the FCC that it change its
definition of broadband. Verizon, AT&T and Comcast are asking the
government to define broadband transmissions as anything over 768 Kbps
downstream and 200 Kbps upstream. They were responding to an FCC call
seeking definitions to help it develop a national broadband plan under
the terms of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Boom Time for FOSS
The current economic recession may be pummeling companies around the
globe, but amid all the dire reports and grim statistics littering what
can only be compared to a bloody battlefield, one oft-cited exception
appears to be still standing tall: free and open source software. That's
what the common discourse seems to suggest, at least, and there's some
anecdotal evidence to support it.

The 'Flat Funnel' Marketing Myth
The concept of "the funnel" is a sacred cow in marketing. The basic
concept of leads progressing through a series of steps of escalating
interaction until they finally make a purchase is intuitive. At the
macro level, it is fairly easy to model the funnel and assign labels to
each step. However, the model's accuracy decays rapidly when marketers
cut each step into ever smaller slices.

Google Loses Leader of China Offensive
The executive who led Google's expansion in China after being hired away
from Microsoft following a high-profile court battle is leaving to start
his own business, the U.S. search engine announced Friday. Kai-Fu Lee
will step down as president of Google Greater China in mid-September.

EC's Long, Hard Look at Sun-Oracle Deal Gets Longer, Harder
Setting up a WiFi network at home has gotten much easier, yet the
process can still be daunting. Or the wireless signal won't reach
everywhere. A good alternative that has gotten little attention involves
your electric sockets. Simply plug palm-sized adapters into regular wall
outlets and connect your computers to the adapters.
