| This week in Car Tech | | | 2009 Frankfurt auto show: Sneak peeks, leaks By: Antuan Goodwin Associate Editor, Car Tech
Next week, the curtain will be lifted at the 2009 Frankfurt auto show and automakers from around the globe will trot out their newest production models, bleeding edge technology, and wild concepts. In an effort to grab our attention early, automakers have littered the road leading to Frankfurt with sneak peeks, early unveilings, and the occasional leaked photo; and it seems that the theme for this year's show will be electric motivation.
Lexus gave us a peek at its LF-Ch compact hybrid concept, but when more photos leaked to the Web early, the Japanese automaker caved and released high-resolution images of the hybrids exterior and interior. Audi has been hinting at a mysterious electric model for weeks, but seems to have let slip its upcoming R8 Spyder.
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz and BMW both have luxury hybrid concepts dubbed "Vision." The Benz Vision S 500 PHEV is a relatively conservative plug-in hybrid version of its S-Class sedan that's capable of going up to 18 miles under electric-only power. On the other hand, BMW's Vision is a wild transparent concept with insect-like wing doors and a hybrid power train that pairs a powerful three-cylinder turbo diesel with a pair of electric motors.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, so stay tuned to our continuing coverage of the 2009 Frankfurt auto show.
