Podcast
Lawyers Come Knocking: Info Management and E-Discovery (31:33 minutes)
Either in real terms or perceived terms, security is one of the biggest
hang-ups people have, and it's a wide-open question. When we talk about
the cloud and the enterprise, are we talking about something that is
fundamentally different in terms of securing it, versus what people are
accustomed to doing across their networks?

Today's Story Highlights

Cloud Computing, or Everything as a Service
If you ask anyone today to define "cloud computing," there is slim
chance you will get agreement on an exact definition. It is one of those
emerging technologies that everyone knows they want to get into, but no
one seems to know why or what the real benefit is. There is a lot of
promise, but very few companies have realized tangible benefits from
such services.

Beyond CRM: 5 Steps to Outfox Your Competitors
Imagine this all-too-common scenario: A customer needs to add a new line
to his cellphone plan. He's had a number of reception and phone issues,
and he will stay with his current company only if offered a very good
deal. However, the agent -- unaware of the prolonged dissatisfaction and
insensitive to the customer's tone -- suggests an expensive upgrade plan
and rushes the customer to some type of decision.

Amazon Savages Google Book Settlement in Court Brief
Online bookseller Amazon.com is warning a federal judge that Internet
search leader Google will be able to gouge consumers and stifle
competition if it wins court approval to add millions more titles to its
already vast digital library. The harsh critique of Google's 10-month-
old settlement with U.S. authors and publishers emerged this week in a
41-page brief that Amazon filed.

YouTube May Jump Into Online Movie Rental Stream
YouTube, Google's online video streaming service, is in talks with
Hollywood studios to rent new release movies online, according to people
familiar with the talks. The move follows similar deals by Apple's
iTunes and others. A final deal would be contingent on pricing and an
agreed-upon release date.

Coalition Mounts Campaign for Stiffer Privacy Laws
Congress should enact strict controls on how online advertisers can
monitor and track consumers' behavior, according to 10 privacy groups
that formed a coalition to lobby for the cause. The group has sent
letters to six members of the U.S. House of Representatives describing
the extent to which personal data can be gleaned from an individual's
online habits.

Gmail Failure Heightens Cloud Computing Jitters
Gmail's 100-minute outage Tuesday was the result of a cascading series
of router failures caused by a combination of hardware maintenance and
traffic policies, Google said. The failure of the third-most popular Web
mail service left users around the world who access the system online
instead of through an email client unable to send or receive new
messages or retrieve saved ones.
