Getting IT to Speak Business-ese (12:51 minutes)
For the most part, IT people tend to operate in their own space and
speak their own language. In many organizations, the department is
treated like its own silo, and it often doesn't report directly to the
CEO. As a result, IT is too often disconnected from the elements driving
the business. However, that reality is beginning to slowly change.

Today's Story Highlights

Thinking Outside the Green IT Box
"Green IT" has been a tech industry cause celebre for the past few
years, first arising as the potential effects of global warming were
coming increasingly to the fore and then enjoying a significant boost as
the global recession compounded the practical value of data center
energy efficiency and power savings.

6 Tips for Narrowing Your PPM Vendor Shortlist
Due to the economy, many businesses are now looking at project portfolio
management solutions to help them isolate and execute mission-critical
projects more effectively. These businesses have also found that
Software as a Service solutions are both more affordable and easier to
deploy than traditional ones.

Reductive Labs Snaps Up Cash, Pumps Up Puppet
Before he helped start Reductive Labs, CEO Luke Kanies was determined to
improve IT systems management options to eliminate the repetitive tasks
required to manage policies across networks, cloud computing systems,
and virtual machine banks. In 2002, that direction led to the Puppet
project, a system for automating admin tasks. The launch of his company
followed in 2003.

Taiwan Takes Dell to Task for Reneging on Advertised Prices
U.S. computer maker Dell could be fined up to $758,000 if Taiwanese
authorities decide the company's handling of its recent online pricing
errors has violated the law. On June 25, Dell's Taiwanese Web site
labeled its 19-inch LCD monitors at the equivalent of $15.16 and 20-inch
LCD monitors at $30.29. In each case, that's about $210 less than the
real retail price.

Best Buy Cruises for Green With Electric Vehicles
Best Buy is rolling out a pilot program for a new product category:
electronic Segways. The company has announced it will be selling these
vehicles in 20 stores in Washington, Oregon and California, with
electric motorcycles to join the mix later this summer. There had been
expectations that Best Buy would be dipping its toe into the electric
motorcycle market.

Andreessen Sinks Gold Into Tech VC Gambit
He was into cloud computing before cloud computing was cool. Before
that, he'd given the world its first real Web browser. He's a board
member of eBay and Facebook, and he's invested in some must-watch Web
2.0 companies: Digg, Twitter, Ning, etc. So when Marc Andreessen
announced on his blog Sunday night that he's raised $300 million to
launch a new venture capital firm for tech startups, the industry paid
attention.
