
AT&T's Golden Goose May Turn Out to Be an Albatross

All eyes were on Apple's iPhone as AT&T reported a second-quarter dip in profit. The iPhone helps AT&T by attracting new customers, all of whom must sign on for a high-dollar data plan. That comes at a price, though: The carrier pays big to subsidize most of the iPhones it sells, and buyers tend to put a lot of burden on AT&T's network, necessitating costly build-outs.
