The SHO goes on

The problem with following innovation in the automotive world is the waiting. It was almost a year ago that we heard about Ford's new EcoBoost engine, a 3.5-liter V-6 with twin turbos, but we had to wait until this summer to actually test it in the 2010 Ford Taurus SHO. From the beginning, we were excited to hear that an American company was actually doing something interesting on the power train front. In previous decades American companies always seemed to be years behind German and Japanese automakers. But Ford has recently shown a thirst for innovation, and is reaping rewards for its foresight. The Taurus SHO incorporates all that excellent cabin tech we've enjoyed using over the past year, and complements it with this EcoBoost engine that turns the Taurus into a muscle car. In our testing, it hit 60 mph in just five seconds, an impressive result considering the car's weight and its standard all-wheel-drive.

Wayne Cunningham Spark plugs giving way to lasers
Wayne Cunningham
Say goodbye to spark plugs, a 19th century technology about to be supplanted by lasers. The U.K. paper The Telegraph reports that Ford is working with the University of Liverpool to develop a laser ignition system for internal-combustion engines. That's right: engines with frickin' lasers strapped to their heads. Read more

Return of the SHO
Posted by streamline35
It'll have to do better than 18 mpg first (and drop down the $42K price tag)--though granted, the price tag was just because they were reviewing such a high end model. Looks like the fuel economy for the less powerful engine (AWD) is the same.  Read more
