Today's Story Highlights

The Microhoo Union: Tiny Prenup, Rough Honeymoon, Separate Bedrooms
The hour has come round at last for the birth of the beast known as
Microhoo, a monster with the head of Steve Ballmer and the body of Carol
Bartz. The two have been making kissy faces at each other for years --
the two companies, figuratively; not the two people, literally ... to
the best of my knowledge, anyway. Now it seems Yahoo and Microsoft have
finally done the deed.

In Mobile Advertising, Experimentation Is the Name of the Game
The proliferation of smartphones, alongside the growth in number of
subscribers of 3G network data plans, is having a ripple effect on
multiple markets, from mobile apps to hardware enhancements. As media
becomes increasingly fragmented, advertisers are focused on
multiplatform media strategies in order to capture and retain consumer
attention.

Dutch Court Orders Pirate Bay Out of Netherlands
A Dutch court ruled Thursday that three men connected with Web site The
Pirate Bay must block traffic between the site and the Netherlands
within 10 days. The written ruling concludes that the men have control
over the site and ordered them "each separately and together, to stop
and keep stopped the infringements on copyright and related rights of
Stichting Brein in the Netherlands" or face fines.

Amazon Targeted in Class Action Over Vanishing E-Books
A high school student is suing Amazon.com for deleting an e-book he
purchased for the Kindle reader, saying his electronic notes were
bollixed, too. Amazon CEO Jeffrey P. Bezos has apologized to Kindle
customers for remotely removing copies of the George Orwell novels
"1984" and "Animal Farm" from their e-reader devices.

Alcatel-Lucent Sees a Jot of Black Ink
Alcatel-Lucent surprised its investors Thursday by posting its first
profit since the company's creation in a transatlantic merger in 2006,
as gains on asset sales helped the telecommunications equipment maker's
bottom line. The Paris-based company reported a net profit of about
$19.6 million for the April through June period, compared to a net loss
of roughly $1.6 billion a year earlier.

Regulators Likely to Green-Light Microsoft, Yahoo Deal
Now that Microsoft and Yahoo have finally come to terms on how they will
work together to gain turf in the search advertising market, they must
convince antitrust regulatory authorities both in the U.S. and in Europe
that their union will create more competition -- not less. That will be
no easy task.
